What does Chiropractic mean to me?
This is something we have been encouraged to look at in our Philosophy class and it is probably the most difficult concept chiropractors have to explain about their profession. So, even though there are chiropractors out there who may disagree, I offer here my own personal perspective:
Chiropractic is a way of reducing the stressors in your life.
Pretty big huh? Well I like to keep it simple and to the point as I think a lot of people in our profession over complicate it, as it is quite a big concept to get your head around when you are used to looking at the world in a slightly different perspective. The thing is that most people think that Chiropractic is all about people with ‘bad backs’ getting ‘cracked’. First off I would like to pose the concept that there is no such thing as a bad back. There are simply backs which seem to function without pain, in which case we tend to ignore them, or backs that experience pain during function. How these latter backs got to where they are is a whole different story and I will discuss them later.
Back to my stressors. The way chiropractic sees it there are three main areas of stress in our lives,
Physical – Activities which put our bodies under stress such as over exercising or exercising incorrectly
Chemical – Alcohol, drugs and environmental pollutants
Emotional – Anything which can be distressing to us on an emotional level such as the loss of a loved one or the end of a relationship or losing a job.
So any of these things can add to a state of stress for our bodies. The thing is we don’t always notice this stress. Our bodies are ever changing, growing and evolving in response to the environment in which we live. We learn to adapt to these stressors which is something our bodies are particularly good at. Most of us spend a great deal of our lives coping with this stress but probably not dealing with it properly after all, dealing with stress is not something a lot of us know how to do, especially if we don’t realise how much stress we are under. Suddenly when our bodies finally reach their limit, the wheels fall off! We have symptoms! This is when most people decide to do something about it and their first point of call is often a GP. Quite often they will be given medication to deal with the symptoms but not always is the cause dealt with. Chiropractors, on the other hand, look at wellness care which deals with helping the body cope with stressors as they occur. By ensuring that the nervous system is functioning at it’s best, the body’s communication system allows the many chemical messengers to travel efficiently and affectively around the body initiating the body’s own natural healing capabilities.
So it’s all about keeping well!
My question to you this week, do you see or have you ever been to a chiropractor before for wellness? What do you do to take care of your health proactively?
